Uncrowned Queens host the Uncrowned Kings reception at the University at Buffalo

On Friday October 19, 2007, the Uncrowned Queens Institute held the Uncrowned Kings reception at the University at Buffalo, Allen Hall. The reception was the follow-up to the much heralded Uncrowned Kings Initiative and web-page which was launched on April 28th at the Frank E. Merriweather, Jr. Public Library. Queens in the Wings

Queens in WaitingOn July 7, 2007, the Uncrowned Queens Institute announced the launch of its young women's version of Uncrowned Queens. It is called Uncrowned Queens in the Wings. The first announcement of the new program segment took place during the taping of the Uncrowned Queens Television Program, Illuminations. The show was taped during the Third Annual Book Fair hosted by the Black Capital Network and a number of other contributors. More...

Uncrowned Queens Celebrate Centennial at the Governor's Mansion

Dr. Peggy Brooks-Bertram and Dr. Barbara Seals Nevergold at the Governor's Mansion in OklahomaOn June 1st, the Uncrowned Queens of Oklahoma were invited to a High Tea at the home of Governor and Mrs. Brad Henry. Over fifty Uncrowned Queens of Oklahoma, accompanied by family members and friends, were feted in this beautiful mansion. Each queen received a crown pin from Blac, Inc. and a citation from the Governor. Special thanks to Anita Arnold, Executive Director of Blac, Inc., Beverly Glover, Board Chair and members of this organization, who planned a full week-end of events honoring Oklahoma's Uncrowned Queens. Uncrowned Queens Co-Founders Travel to Baton Rouge For National Conference of Black Mayors

Peggy Brooks-Bertram and Barbara Seals Nevergold were featured seminar speakers for the NCBM's Women's Caucus on May 2nd in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Nevergold and Brooks-Bertram told an audience of male and female mayors about the Uncrowned Queens model of historical reclamation and preservation. The group responded enthusiastically to the presentation, with several mayors expressing an interest in bringing the Uncrowned Queens to their community. More...

Uncrowned Queens Launches the Uncrowned Kings Initiative and Website

On Saturday, April 28th, the Institute launched its much heralded Uncrowned Kings Initiative and website. Over one hundred individuals, including Uncrowned Kings and their families, attended the program that recognized the first group of men whose histories are recorded on the website. Drs. Barbara Nevergold and Peggy Brooks-Bertram introduced the initiative, recounted the history of the Michigan Avenue YMCA, recognized the Uncrowned Kings and presented the 2007 Culture Keeper Awards to two architects, whose buildings were/are historic sites connected with the growth and development Buffalo's Black community. Uncrowned Queens Co-Founders to be Inducted into the Western New York Women’s Hall Of Fame

The Uncrowned Queens co-founders, Dr. Peggy Brooks-Bertram and Dr. Barbara Seals Nevergold will be inducted into the Western New York Women’s Hall of Fame on March 12, 2007 at the 11th annual induction luncheon. 

The Western New York Women's Hall of Fame's genesis lies in the work of women who organized the New York State Coalition on Women's Issues, Project FLIGHT, a family literacy program, and the Western New York History Committee. Dr. Geraldine E. Bard and Dr Betty J. Cappella of Buffalo State College lead the cadre of women who are the foundation for the Western New York Women's Hall of Fame. The Hall’s mission is: “To honor those women in perpetuity who have worked in a public spotlight, as well as those who have quietly enriched the community and inspired others.” More...
