Drs. Nevergold and Bertram attended the Lucky Number Luncheon hosted by Xi Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. at the Golden Nugget.  The authors signed copies of their books and also donated a two book packet to the sorority to auction off.  The event included both live and silent auctions, the proceeds of which go to support the sorority's scholarships awarded to high school students. The Uncrowned Queens books brought in $27.00 which was contributed to the sorority's scholarship fund.

African American Perspectives on Death and Dying

Dr. Karla Holloway took a cultural and historical look at bereavement, death, and burial among African Americans in the Twentieth Century. 

This event is sponsored by St. John Baptist Church, Rev. Michael Chapman, Pastor and The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care. Peggy Brooks-Bertram is the chair of the Hospice Committee for St. John Baptist Church.

Peggy Brooks-Bertram and Barbara A. Seals Nevergold were interviewed about the Uncrowned Queens Institute, its mission and future plans, and collaborations with other community organizations such as the Juneteenth Festival, Inc. The special was aired on Channel 2 -- WGRZ-TV in honor of Juneteenth.

YWCA Recognition

The YWCA recognized Peggy Brooks-Bertram during the organization's Leadership Luncheon on June 6th for her community service contributions.  The luncheon was held at the Buffalo Convention Center and attended by more than 900 individuals.  A number of Uncrowned Queens were also recognized by the Y for their contributions in various areas of community service and cultural/artistic achievement.

Barbara Seals Nevergold made a presentation on family history. She provided a brief primer on how to begin the search process and identified family history resources to utilize.  She also talked about how to maintain family history records.

Phil Rumore of the Buffalo Teacher's Federation presented 75 copies of the book Uncrowned Queens: African American Women Community Builders of Western New York, Volume I to the Buffalo Schools.

The presentation took place during the Board of Education Meeting on the 8th floor in City Hall. The book authors, Peggy Brooks-Bertram and Barbara Seals Nevergold were on hand to also present.
