EVENTS:  Book Signing

Uncrowned Queens: Volume I Book Cover On October 20, 2002, Uncrowned Queens launched their first book project, Uncrowned Queens:  African American Women Community Builders of Western New York, Volume I, at the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society.  The book authors, Dr. Peggy Brooks-Bertram and Dr. Barbara Seals Nevergold, were on-hand to provide a brief overview of the Uncrowned Queens project since its inception in 1999 and personally sign book copies.  In addition, many of the 100 women who are featured in the book were asked by guests to sign their biography page.

Dennis Bertram in front of Painting Dennis Bertram stands in front of his original oil painting that also dons the cover of Uncrowned Queens, Volume I.  A note of interest, the painting was inspired by a photograph taken by Barbara Nevergold's father, Willie B. Seals, of her grandmother Emma Elizabeth Williams Ellis.
Alpha Beta Sigma Sorority, Inc. Representatives Ester and Shavonne (seated) from Alpha Beta Sigma Sorority, Inc. were on-hand to provide much needed assistance with the book signing.
Donna Rice and Wanda Hackney Uncrowned Queens Donna Rice (seated) and Wanda Hackney are both featured in Volume I.  Dr. Rice was kind enough to open Peggy and Barbara's short presentation prior to the book-signing.
Lillian Bertram Lillian Bertram, daughter of Peggy Brooks-Bertram, said some opening remarks about her mother and Barbara Nevergold during a short presentation on the progress of the Uncrowned Queens project since its inception in 1999.

Dr. Bertram at podium Peggy Brooks-Bertram referenced some interesting statistics on the women that are featured in Uncrowned Queens, Volume I.  In particular, their relationship as degree recipients from the University at Buffalo.
