Essie Hicks attended The State University of New York at Buffalo, where she also worked for twenty-two years before retiring. 

She has been a member of the Mary B. Talbert Civic and Cultural Club since 1994 serving as Treasurer.

Essie was very active in club and church work.  In her church, the United Church of Faith she was as a member of the Board of Directors for the church and also served as Financial Secretary, President of the Deaconess Board, Sunday School Teacher, and President of the Nurses Guild. She organized the Norfolk Ave. Block Club #2 and was the President for two years. She was the Treasurer of the Buffalo Little League Football organization and also kept busy as a team mother for the football league.

She is the proud mother of five children
