
BIOGRAPHY: Rowena Adams Jones

Rowena Adams Jones is a retired Professional Administrator at the University at Buffalo, (UB) for 26 years. She was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania and graduated from Johnstown Senior High School and later attended the University of Pittsburgh where she received a BA in Elementary Education in 1950. She received her Master's Degree in Education at UB in 1972.
While
at UB, Mrs. Adams Jones created and
developed the Browsing Library Study Centers for all students in the Residence
Halls. She coordinated the University Friendship 101 Program for all Freshmen,
and co-taught a course on mentoring for Cora P. Maloney College. She is the recipient of many honors
at UB including the Professional Staff Outstanding Service Award; Outstanding
Service to University at Buffalo
Minority
Faculty and Staff Association; SUNY Outstanding Award for Professional Staff,
and the Appreciation Award for Dedicated Service to the Black Student Union.
Mrs.
Adams Jones has been an active member of St. Luke A.M.E. Zion Church for
more than 50 years and was past Christian Education Director, Sunday School
Teacher, and Director of the Nursery. She is currently President of the Ideal
Club and a member of Concerned Parents Council, the Ruby C. Smith Scholarship
Committee, the Laity Council, and Missionary Life. She is also the recipient of
the Hunter B. Bess Memorial Award for service to God and Zion.
Mrs.
Adams Jones has been actively involved in the community throughout her life. She
was a Girl Scout
Leader
of the Buffalo and Erie County Girl Scout Council
for over 25 years. She started as a Brownie Leader and advanced through each
level with her girls to the Senior level. She served as Chair on the Personnel
Committee, Trainer for the Brownies, Phone-a-Thon committee, received an
Appreciation Award from the Girl Scout
Council,
and was one of 75 leaders recognized at the 75th Anniversary of Girl Scouting.
Mrs.
Adams Jones has been an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for
over 50 years. In addition, she is a member of the Buffalo Alumnae Chapter;
Co-chair Jabberwock Extravaganza, 1985; Director, Historical Fashion Show by
Chapter - presented at Regional and National Conferences of Delta; Recipient of
Appreciation Award for Service to Buffalo Alumnae Chapter;
and the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Award for 50 years of service.
