Malika Kambe Umfazi Sorority, Incorporated

Malika Kambe Umfazi (MKU) is a sorority that promotes academic, philanthropic, social, and cultural growth for all women of Afrika's Diaspora (Afrika, Caribbean, the Americas, etc.).  Even though MKU is a young sorority, its members build and foster knowledge on the value of women work to reclaim the stolen legacy of Afrika's contributions to the world.  To date, there are undergraduate and graduate Queendoms in Buffalo, New York and Washington, DC.

MKU was founded on June 16, 1995 at the State University of New York at Buffalo by twelve dedicated college women.  The Sorority's motto is Sankofa: "You must go back to your past, in order to move forward".  This is a concept within the Adinkra language of the Akan People of West Afrika.

The official principles of MKU are:

  • Mahatma: High-mindedness and selflessness
  • Kinship: Relationship based on race, culture, or background
  • Utilitarianism: Usefulness above beauty

MKU's official focus areas are most critical issues in contemporary society and include health, economic upliftment, education, and careers.  It is MKU's mission to educate, empower, and assist women of Afrikan descent around these central issues, so that they can continue to reclaim their legacy, restore families and communities, and build the future.
