People Are Talking About Uncrowned Queens

If you would like to contact the Uncrowned Queens, please email them at uqi@buffalo.edu.

The Web site provides a long overdue repository for the countless accomplishments of the hitherto faceless African American women, who have unselfishly given of themselves, in many cases to their own demise, for the advancement of their families and community.

Any organization that brings together women of color from various backgrounds and organizations for the purpose of uplifting other women, especially young women and their communities, is of interest to me.

[I am interested] in the fact that women who have contributed to our communities will be recognized and show younger women how to help in making our communities what they should be.

The Web site is a beautiful idea that was put into motion by two history making women that should be celebrated themselves for the creativity they have show others.  Many times we forget what we can do if we put thought into it, and they did it beautifully.

An important and significant source for the recognition of the work of women and for the research on the history of women.  How wonderful it is that this resource is available to a wide array of individuals, scholars, organizations, students, senior centers, etc.  Many thanks to you for creating this Web site.  I will certainly tell other about it.  Good Work!

Your entire site is most interesting, especially learning who you crown, their biographies, what's going on in Buffalo, and the interesting work you are doing.

I thank you and your staff from the bottom of my heart to see that someone has honored my Grandmother in such a public manner as the internet. I was sitting here on watch (in the Navy), talking to my wife on the phone and I said to her "you know it's grandma's birthday today" and she said "yes, I know." So I, just out of curiosity, typed in "Katherine Kirkland" and was overjoyed to see her biography listed. The header had her birthday listed so I knew that it was more than just a coincidence. Your article was to the point and just a heart-felt story to read on this day, her 85th birthday. Thank you very much for your story in honoring the love of my life, my Grandmother Mrs. Katherine Kirkland. I have added both mine as well as my wife's name to your mailing list. I look forward to learning more about your organization, and if you would like any input on the women that I listed above and their impact on my life, please feel free to contact me via email, or phone, all of which is listed above. Again, thank you very much for your write-up.

Today I had the wonderful experience of meeting Dr. Peggy Brooks-Bertram at Millard Fillmore Gates Hospital were I am currently employed in the Admissions Department. She was having a conversation with Mrs. Shirley Parks and I noticed her showing Shirley the Uncrowned Queens books. I was so taken by Dr. Brooks-Bertram that I purchased the books for myself and she did me the great honor of signing them both. She told me all about your work with the community of Tulsa, OK and other projects you are working on.

I just randomly ran across your article on colon cancer. I must commend you on your braveness, and for putting the word out there that colonoscopy's are a MUST!! I am the poster child for them, you see, my mom died in Feb. 06 from undiagnosed diverticulitis, and in April of the same year my dad was diagnosed with the dreaded "COLON CANCER" !!! He, like you, procrastinated. I literally had to threaten him with not seeing his grand kids before he would go for his procedure. Thank the Lord he did. The doc's said the cancer could have been growing for over 10 years!!! I cannot stress enough the importance of getting tested. It does not "HURT". And, these 'MACHO" men better swallow their pride and get their tests done!!! What are they waiting for?? Keep spreading the word, sister!!! God's speed, Tammi Marsh
