You are about to participate in a Campus Waste Audit (a.k.a. "Dumpster Dive") intended to raise awareness about campus recycling and identify components in the campus solid waste stream which are recyclable , thus assisting the recycling program to increase its "diversion" or recycling rate. UB is committed to increasing its recycling rate to 50% of the trash stream. Our current campus recycling rate is between 30 and 40%.
The trash you will be sorting through has been collected from UB's academic and residential buildings. Excluded from the audit is trash from science buildings which could contain laboratory waste or other hazardous materials. Also excluded is most food service area waste.
While the trash you will be sorting should not contain anything hazardous or dangerous, there is the possibility of finding something sharp, noxious, or otherwise potential harmful. Worst case items could include broken glass or sharp metal objects, improperly disposed of chemicals, hypodermic needles, i.e. anything that someone might throw in the trash. Thus, exposure to blood is a risk.
Therefore, all participants must follow these rules:
 |  |
Use prescribed safety equipment which include coveralls, gloves, dust mask, respirator and safety glasses;
|
 |  |
Shoes must be heavy soled; no sandals, open-toed shoes or slippers permitted;
|
 |  |
No eating, drinking, or smoking in the restricted area; and no eating drinking or smoking outside the restricted area until you are washed up;
|
 |  |
Work deliberately and slowly, exercising caution at all times;
|
 |  |
Watch where you step as well as where you reach;
|
 |  |
Do not touch anything you cannot clearly see;
|
 |  |
Do not throw or toss anything;
|
 |  |
Do not run (since the plastic tarp can be very slippery when wet);
|
 |  |
Do not try to lift heavy objects; ask site monitors for assistance;
|
 |  |
Do not take chances -- if you see anything that looks potentially dangerous or you can't identify, call it out so that others in your area know to stay away and then call one of the site monitors who will take care of it (or provide instructions);
|
 |  |
If you are scratched or cut or injured in any way (especially if the skin is broken), immediately see a site monitor and Health Service personnel for medical attention;
|
 |  |
If you believe you have come into contact with blood, immediately see a site monitor and Health Services personnel.
|
 |  |
All participants must wash shoes and proceed immediately to wash-up area in Student Union immediately upon leaving the restricted area.
|
Questions about the recyclability of various materials should be brought to the attention of site monitors.
Participating in this activity is appropriate only for people in good health with no known respiratory, cardiac or immune system illness, conditions or problems including those which could be aggravated by the stress of wearing protective equipment or by coming into contact with materials in the trash stream. Those with allergies or who use a bronchodialator, or who have been too ill to work or attend school in the last three days should not participate.
