Replace oil-based paints with water-based paints; use non-toxic supplies where possible.

Minimize use of cleaning solvents. Reuse soiled thinners and solvents for initial rinsings of dirty brushes and use fresh solvents for final rinsings only.

Recycle used solvents and oils for use as cleansers/degreasers in maintenance. Check with Occupational and Environmental Safety Services for distillation guidelines.

Use biodegradable and non-toxic cleansers in place of more hazardous no-aqueous ones.

Recover and dispose of mercury wastes from thermometers, barometers, switches, and sink traps. Investigate proper disposal methods with Environmental Health and Safety.

Use proper maintenance procedures and equipment to prevent atmospheric venting of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) from refrigeration and air conditioning equipment. Explore the use of alternative non-CFC, non-ozone-depleting refrigerants.

Through training programs or seminars educate all personnel working with hazardous materials on the specific dangers and proper disposal of commonly used substances.

Remember that all hazardous wastes must be disposed of through the University’s Hazardous Waste Management System. If you have doubts about a particular substance, check with UB’s Occupational and Environmental Safety Services at 829-2401 for the proper handling method.
