Replace oil-based paints with water-based paints; use non-toxic supplies where possible.

Minimize use of cleaning solvents. Reuse soiled thinners and solvents for crude rinsings of dirty brushes and use fresh solvents for final rinsings only.

Check with Occupational and Environmental Safety Services about recovering or recycling silver from photographic developing wastes.

Modify spray painting techniques to minimize waste: overlap spray pattern by 50%, maintain a 6” to 8” distance perpendicular to the surface being painted, and trigger the gun at the beginning and end of each stroke.

Use biodegradable and non-toxic cleaners in place of more hazardous non-aqueous ones.

Through training programs or seminars educate all personnel working with hazardous materials on the specific dangers of commonly used materials.

Remember that all hazardous wastes must be disposed of through the University’s Hazardous Waste Management System. If you have doubts about a particular substance, check with UB’s Occupational and Environmental Safety Services at 829-2401 for the proper handling method.
