UB is committed to energy conservation and has had an active energy conservation program --called Conserve UB-- since the late 1970's. Documented energy savings are estimated to be in excess of $9 million annually, with $60 million in cumulative savings since the beginning of the program. Energy conservation also results in substantial environmental benefits.
UB's two campuses have numerous lighting, heating and cooling energy systems. The operation of these systems result in approximately $20 million a year in energy costs.
The UB Conservation program is a team effort - relying on action by University Facilities staff as well by all members of the University community who can help in a variety of ways (see energy conservation tips). The program includes energy conservation projects undertaken by University Facilities, campus energy policies, a campus wide energy awareness program, and a green building design initiative. The awareness program encourages green computing and good lighting practices.
