The UB energy conservation program actively discourages the use of halogen Torchiere-type floor lamps. These lamps draw 200-300 watts of electrical power, many times that of conventional incandescent or overhead fluorescent lighting. Moreover, due the temperature of the halogen bulb, halogen fixtures pose a fire risk. They are illegal in all campus buildings.

For those who find floor lamps with up-lighting preferable to overhead fluorescent lighting, we recommend the use of Torchiere style lamps with dimmable fluorescent lamps.

When operating table or floor lamps, please experiment with keeping overhead lights off to save energy. All table and floor lighting fixtures should have compact fluorescent lamps, not wasteful incandescents.
