What is the Building Conservation Contact (BCC) Network?

The BCC Network is comprised of individuals who serve as conservation liaisons and advocates within their own campus department or office. They informally monitor activities which have environmental impacts, the raise environmental awareness, and encourage participation in University environmental programs such as energy conservation, recycling, using recycled paper, waste reduction, etc.

When was the Network created and how many BCCs are there?

The BCC Network was created in 1994-1995 by Matt Deck who was UB Recycling Coordinator at the time. There are now about 170 BCCs. Most offices and departments have one or more BCCs.

Why was the BCC Network Created?

We have always recognized that good environmental policies alone don’t make a "green campus." They need to be implemented! At a college or university, implementation mostly occurs through voluntary cooperation and personal commitment from members of the campus community. Environmental awareness raising activities are needed to motivate this cooperation. But how many people are affected by awareness events or campaigns? The BCC Network was created to enable UB’s campus environmental program to reach out and make contact with faculty, students, and staff in all corners of the University.

Who administers the BCC Network?

The BCC Network is a program of the UB’s Environmental Task Force and is administered by the UB Green Office in University Facilities. UB Green Office maintains the BCC Network member list, recruits and trains new members, provides support to BCC office and departmental environmental initiatives, develops and supplies campus environmental resources and program ideas, distributes an occasional BCC newsletter, and organizes an annual BCC meeting.

What are the responsibilities of a BCC?

Sharing information about UB environmental policies and programs to members of their department, office, etc.
Encouraging participation and involvement in campus environmental programs.
Informally monitoring participation levels and identifying problem areas which impede conservation efforts.
Acting as liaison between their unit and the ETF and the UB Green Office.

How do I become a BCC?

To become a BCC or for further information, contact Environmental Educator Erin Cala, Coordinator for the BCC Network, at 829-3535 or UB Energy Officer Walter Simpson, Director of the UB Green Office, at 829-2515.
