Student Environmental Education Projects
The UB Green Office advocates using the campus as a learning lab for student internship and independent study projects. A previous independent study involved researching energy and recycling opportunities in UB residence halls and UB's overall recycling potential by conducting a "dumpster dive" of UB's trash stream. Environmental independent study projects are available in a number of areas, e.g. evaluating the effectiveness of campus environmental programs or policies or developing a campus greenhouse gas emissions mitigation plan. We are committed to environmental and energy education. Walter Simpson, director of the UB Green Office, teaches the SSC 385 "Alternative Energy Systems" undergraduate course (generally offered spring semesters). We also provide technical support for the Environmental Audit course whose students have completed environmental surveys of Buffalo City Hall, the Butler Mansion, and Amherst Central High School.
Environmental Resource Room
This library of environmental materials - books, magazines, videos and vertical files (along with internet access) -- is located in Room 202 in the Service Building on the UB South Campus (220 Winspear Avenue, on the corner of Rotary Rd. and Winspear Ave.). The room is available to UB students and others who wish to research topics in energy and the environment. The environmental resource room is usually open 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. weekdays -- though users are encouraged to call first, 829-3535.

Community Outreach and Public Service
The UB Green Office actively shares UB campus environmental resources with interested individuals and programs at other schools, nationally and internationally. We have worked closely with the National Wildlife Federation's Campus Ecology Program and the Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers on a variety of green campus projects. We also promote environmental education in the wider community, often through special events. In 1999, 2000, and 2001, we organized successful regional green building design workshops and forums attended by hundreds of local designers, builders and government officials. We also organized the 2001 three-day UB and Buffalo residency of Paul Loeb, author of Soul of a Citizen: Living with Conviction in a Cynical Time which included speeches and workshops for faculty, staff, students and community audiences.
