BIODEGRADATION Laboratory

Organic Waste System biodegradation and in-lab composing system with 32-position on-line autosampler for analyses of volatile gasses and biodegradation products from decomposing vessels. Gases are analyzed by microprocessor controlled sequential sampler attached to a Shimadzu Gas Chromatograph to analyze for CO2, O2, and N2.

COCO Digestion system with 36 vessel electrolytic respirometers. System is microprocessor controlled with data handling on a dedicated computer.

Instron 1011 Tensilometer for materials and films characterization (following ASTM protocols) with dedicated PC for data analyses.

The Centers Biodegradation Laboratory conducts both laboratory and field studies.  One project conducted for a company combined laboratory and field studies to evaluate photo-, thermal-, and bio- degradation of their product.  Product placed with local compost operations was evaluated over time using light and electron microscopic methods and tensile strength measurements (using ASTM methods).  Parallel studies in the laboratory examined photo-, thermal-, and bio- degradation (using ASTM methods) of the product using the same analysis techniques.  In addition, Center personnel conducted bench top radiosynthesis of Carbon 14 labeled polyolefins (backbone label) and extruded films following company protocols for use in biodegradation studies (using ASTM method D5209-92) conducted over the course of one year.
