submission guidelines

theory@buffalo is a peer-reviewed interdisciplinary journal devoted to publishing previously unpublished critical essays. The editors do not accept manuscripts that are currently under consideration by other journals.

length:
Submissions should be 10,000 words maximum. Essays of fewer than 2,500 words will not be considered for publication.

formatting:
Manuscripts should be typed, with double spacing throughout (including block quotes, end notes, and works cited), on standard 8½ x 11 white paper with one inch margins on all sides. Typeface should be restricted to 12 pt Times New Roman. Submissions should be prepared in accordance with the latest edition of the MLA Handbook . Accordingly, authors are to use in-text parenthetical references as well as a works cited page (instead of a bibliography) and end notes (instead of footnotes). The author's name should not appear on any page of the manuscript proper, only on the cover sheet. All pages (excluding the cover sheet and abstract) should include page numbers preceded by an abbreviated version of the title. The cover sheet should include all of the following information (in the order given): author name, association/affiliation, mailing address, e-mail address, essay title, and word count. All authors are asked to include a single-spaced 200-250-word abstract attached to each copy of their manuscript immediately following the cover page. The essay's title should accompany the abstract. Do not include the author's name on the abstract page.

illustrations:
Do not include orginal photographs or artwork with submissions. Authors submiting manuscripts in hard copy should simply insert a photocopy of the image(s) at the end of their manuscript, labeled Figure 1, Figure 2, etc. A bracketed note should be inluded in the text of the essay to indicate the preferred location of each image (ex. [insert Figure1]). For those submitting electronically, include each image as a separate file. Acceptable image file formats include PDF, JPEG, PIC, and TIF. Be advised that it is the sole responsibility of authors to obtain permission to reproduce any copyrighted materials.

submitting manuscripts: All submissions should be word processed using Microsoft Word (PC or Mac). Manuscripts can be submitted in hard copy or as an e-mail attachment. Hard copy submissions should include three (3) copies of the manuscript. Hard copy submissions should both include a self-addressed stamped envelope. E-mail submissions should be sent to the current editors as a Microsoft Word file attachment or rich text file. Images should be attached as separate files. Upon acceptance, authors will be asked to provide a brief biographical sketch. As a rule, manuscripts and other submitted materials are not returned. The editors do not assume responsibility for loss of or damage to submitted materials.
