STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK
MEDICAL INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS

All students at the State University of New York are required to have a medical insurance policy that covers them to a certain standard. The SUNY policy meets the minimum requirements of the State of New York. It is available to students for approximately $620 per year (12 months). This policy is intended for your protection and is quite comprehensive (for details please consult the SUNY Medical Insurance brochure). The SUNY policy is automatically assigned to all students.

If you wish to purchase medical insurance from another company, you must have that policy reviewed to make sure it meets and/or exceeds the SUNY policy. If your policy does match or exceed the SUNY policy, you may then have the SUNY requirement waived.

To avoid the inconvenience of having your policy reviewed upon arrival in Buffalo, and the risk of having it rejected, it is strongly recommended that you have a prospective medical insurance policy pre-approved by the Student Medical Insurance Office BEFORE purchasing it.

To do so, please complete the International Health Insurance Waiver Form and have your proposed insurance company complete the Clarification of Insurance Policy Benefits Form.

You may mail or fax your International Health Insurance Waiver Form and Clarification of Insurance Policy Benefits Form to the exchange student advisor, or you may send it directly to:

The inability to cancel another insurance policy will not release you from the necessity to purchase the SUNY policy if the coverage is not adequate according to SUNY standards.
