All the things I need to know
I learned in my first semester of Nursing School
I learned that kindness is sometimes the best medicine, that a caring
touch can ease a hurting soul, and that sometimes a smile is more than
enough to brighten someone’s day.
I learned that I want to help everyone, but I also learned that I can’t
help them all.
I learned that a person’s eyes will say more than any of their words
ever will.
I learned that children can be more brave than the strongest men on
earth, and that sometimes they are born into situations where they have
no choice but to be brave.
I learned that anyone can teach you a lesson, whether they are 9 hours
old or 90 years old, and that sometimes the greatest gift ever is the
lesson that they teach.
I learned that you have to be able to care for your patients, but you
have to be prepared to let them go.
I learned that you may think you know what is best for a client, but you
always have to let them make their own decisions, even if they aren’t
the ones that you would make.
I learned that you must respect a person’s pride, because sometimes it
is the only thing they have left in the world that is theirs.
And I learned that sometimes the only form of communication that is
needed is a smile.
But, most importantly of all, I learned that I want to be a nurse.
