mission. history. organization.

The Native American Peoples' Alliance was formed in March of 1970 under the name Native American Cultural Awareness Organization, which was then changed to NAPA in 1986. The club was established with the purpose of serving as a support group for all Native students at the University. Our organization is diverse, enthusiastic, exciting, and has a strong sense of community. We help assist the University in the recruitment, enrollment, retention, and graduation of the Native American students to the University.

NAPA actively works with and supports the Native American Studies Department , faculty and staff, as well as work with other faculty, staff, clubs, and organizations on areas of mutual concern and benefit. The club was actually formed prior to Native American Studies which began in the fall of 1970.The first undergraduate recruitment drive brought 35 native students to campus, which has not been done again since. The firsrt members of NAPA have been directly responsible for the selection of Oren Lyons as faculty and the placement of four graduate students in American Studies.

NAPA participates in university functions and hosts various events. We hold traditional Iroquois Socials, high school recruitment day for Native students, and participate in Homecoming, and the Annual Multi-Cultural Bazaar.

We also work with community-based organizations for the benefit of Native American Peoples
