Meeting MinutesOctober 16, 2003

Meeting Start Time: 7:18

7:18Minutes sent around for review. (Approved at 8:11)

7:19SA Spirit Week
-Everyone did awesome for National Coming Out week, but we had a lot of people that dropped the ball with Spirit week. There was a general air of pre-occupation
-We aren’t nagging you just because we wanted to win, but to remind everyone of the importance of our club participating in SA events.
-This is something that becomes very important around budget hearing time, when we have to go before the SA e-board.
-We want to work on some community service and fundraising events in the next few weeks, but that is going to be hard to do if we don’t have member support, and even worse if all we get is apathy from the members.

7:21Fundraising/Community Service
-What ideas do you as members have that would be generally interested to other members?
-The e-board wants feedback, because they don’t want to get stuck doing everything themselves, they are here to serve the club not to nag you guys to death.
-Member suggestion of a sucker/pixy stick raffle, certain individuals said that they would look into the details, and get back to e-board.

7:26Pot Luck Dinner

-Last November we hosted a pot luck dinner for with several other organizations. We are interested in doing it again this year.
-More details will be coming as we get closer to November.
-If you know anyone rather an individual or person connected with another LGBT group, please feel free to invite them, or to give their information to one of the e-board members so that they may extend an invitation.

7:28Events
-We need to make a flyer for the woman’s support group; this is an SA requirement for any event that closes off the office, which is a publicly owned university space. Shaun is in the process of making one for COSG which is also needs be advertised.
-As for large scale events, the club doesn’t have much more planned for the rest of the semester. However, we will be continuing our general meetings, movie night, and support groups.
-Again if anyone would like to organize further adventures, or hears about something that might be fun, the e board can help to organize a road trip or assist as needed.

7:30Adopt-a-Club
-We would like to participate in Lorenzo’s adopt a club program which was discussed at our last meeting.
-Our club has been around for some thirty years and has a rather secure position within the Student Association, taking this into account; we would like to help another club that might be struggling. This provides us with an opportunity to show outreach within SA, and provides us with more help for future events, and an expansion of our member base.
-It also gives us more stuff to do as a club.
-We have been approached by the president of Exhale Winter Guard, and are putting the issue before our members to see if the would be interested in taken them on as our adopted club.
-Vote put before members- (17 voting members present)
YES: 11
NO: 4
ABSTAIN: 2
-It is the decision of the majority that we will adopt Exhale.

7:35Next Weeks Movie
-There was a suggestion made that we should show a gay comedy special next week.
-Suggestions were taken and a vote put before the club:
Ellen Degeneres- 5
Margaret Cho- 6
Eddie Izzard- 7
Paula Poundstone- 0
-Next week we will show Eddie Izzard: Dressed to Kill.

7:40GRASP
-GRASP is our Gender Roles and Sexuality Program, this is available to groups both on and off campus, resident halls, and also to classes upon professor request.
-Rachel is our current GRASP coordinator. Even though we haven’t had any request for programs, she has been networking for us though the University’s Diversity Sub-Committee on Sexual Orientation. This is a student and faculty group is working to promote the Safe Zone and GRASP programs.
-They are very interested in keep GRASP as a peer group, which is exciting, even more exciting is that they would like to help the program by promoting it in ways that we as students might find difficult (i.e. bring it up for us at a faculty meeting).
-We are hoping for an increased in the demand for GRASP programs, and in expectation we would like to take a few moments to give the new members a feel for what the program is like, and help to promote and inform some members of issues, terms, and concepts that they might be unsure of.

GRASP
-Icebreaker- Take an opportunity to get people thinking, and start a discussion by posing questions and having people either agree or disagree based on where they are standing in the room.
-Definitions- Go through the list of terms and buzz words that appears in the grasp pamphlet. Panel members take turns reading and expanding upon the terms with a personal story that relates to their term. This is a large section in covers issues from across the LGBT community including: Internalized homophobia, Transgender, Transvestite, transsexual, Drag Kings/Queens, Gender v. Sexuality, Coming out, and Straight Allies. Just to name a few.
-Discussion of Heterosexual Questioner and Symbols- The section goes over the symbols of the LGBT community (i.e. Lambda, Pink Triangle, Rainbow Flag, Double Bladed Axe, Freedom rings, etc.) giving background information and history. Then it goes on to a list of questions that have been rewritten to help heterosexuals understand the kinds of misconceptions that LGBT people face. Questions included things along the lines of: “Do you think that your heterosexuality is just a phase that you will eventually grow out of?” or “Are you sure you’re straight, is it possible that all you need is a good homosexual lover?”
-Hate Crimes- The facilitator discusses Matthew Shepard, reading sections from the case file and trial, surrounding the events. The floor is then opened for a discussion of the topic.
-Question and Answer period/ Discussion period- People are given time to pose questions, and ask for an elaboration of anything they don’t completely understand, or would like to know more about.
-The program can be done for any one hour class; we usually schedule an hour and a half for the program

8:13
