Institute of Industrial Engineers! 2007-2008 INFO ---------------------------------------------------------------------- As President of the Institute of Industrial Engineers, I would like to welcome all incoming students, and welcome back all returning students to UB. IIE will be having its first meeting sometime before Friday, September 14th (please check back in the next couple of days for the exact time and date). We will be serving refreshments and discussing what we have to look forward to this year. Incase you haven't really heard of IIE, here are some of the things we have participated in the past, as well as some of the things we hope to start up this year: The IIE Regional Conference - this will be in the early spring semester at the University of Pittsburgh. A great weekend long event and lots of fun…come to the meeting to find out more. UB Improvement Projects - We're going to expand on our efforts last year and help to improve UB and our ISE department. UB Civic Engagement Projects - this is a new initiative by the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. We will discuss this in the meeting, and in the future will have a meeting with someone from SEAS to discuss what projects they have in mind. We're also going to be needing help to come up with fundraising and community service ideas. This will also be discussed in further detail at the meeting. I hope you see you all at the meeting. If you can't make it, feel free to email me and I can set up a time where you can talk to me or one of the other officers about IIE and what you can do in it. IIE is a great way to get involved, and network with fellow students. More information about IIE will be given out at the meeting, so please attend! Thanks, Matthew Henchey President of the Institute of Industrial Engineers mhenchey@buffalo.edu A little about our IIE club: IIE is a great way to meet other students in the Industrial and Systems Engineering major here at UB, as well as some of the Professors that will be teaching you. It's also a great way to begin networking, and get your name out there to professionals, as you will be a student member of the professional society by joining our UB chapter. You must submit $15 to become a student member of the professional society of IIE (as the department is paying for the other half of the fee), or you can choose to just be part of UB's chapter of IIE. Please click on the IIE button to the left for more details. We have a lot planned for this year, and look forward to seeing you at the meetings. Check back here and in the News/Events section to see what's going on. Don't forget to check out the Calendar and News/Events sections so you can keep up to date with what's going on in IIE. A little about IIE and what Industrial Engineers are: "IIE is the world's largest professional membership society dedicated solely to the support of the industrial engineering profession and individuals involved with improving quality and productivity." (From the Institute of Industrial Engineers website) “‘Industrial engineer’ is synonymous with systems integrator - a big-picture thinker, in other words. It's an employee who takes what exists today and conceptualizes what should exist in the future. A lot of engineers become disillusioned with the engineering profession because they get involved in minutiae or they end up on a CAD machine all the time, and they never get out in the factory environment or the operating environment. That's not what happens to an industrial engineer. IEs spend most of their time out in the real operating environment, coming up with scientific approaches to problems rather than seat-of-the-pants, temporary solutions,” says John Samuels, vice president of Norfolk Southern.
