Forward by BJ:
I had been unable to be involved with the team like in years past. I had a heart problem midway through the season and managed to show up to play sectionals. The team rarely practiced, but had a lot of returning players from the Regionals run of 2008.
Saturday:
Looking at the pool play portion of the tournament, we saw the opportunity to perhaps go 5-0, winning the pool. We also saw the chance to go 2-3, eliminating us from Regionals contention. We came in ranked 4th within the pool due to our poor performance during the spring season.
Game 1: Vs. Bard
A warm up game for us, Bard didn't have a chance. Comic relief provided in 00 calling for a rodeo from Beadie in the end zone. Timmy J also calling “MENTAL D” when his man drops a wide-open pass. We win 13-3.
Game 2: Vs. Colgate
Earlier in the year, GEH had a fierce come back against Colgate at the Binghamton tournament. This time we would control the game early, winning a sluggish game 8-4.
Game 3: Vs. Hamilton
Hamilton did not show, costing the section a 5th bid to Regionals. We win by forfeit.
Game 4. Vs. RPI
RPI, like Buffalo, had been steadily improving over the years. We had beaten them the previous year for a spot to Regionals, but this was their time for revenge. RPI handled the game easily 13-6. It should be noted that their depth and balance beat our power trio of Dasky, Travis, and Twitchell.
Game 5. Vs. Syracuse
Syracuse wanted revenge for the previous years defeat, and we knew going into this game that we had to step up. It was also the deciding game to move on in the bracket. If we win the game, we move into 2nd place, if not, a 3 way tie for 2nd occurs based on point differential. Syracuse had a very huge team, but not a lot of talent at the top. One handler in particular was the point guard of their offense and the only real reason why they had a shot in the game. After getting up and dictating the flow, we held on for an 11-9 capped win.
Sunday:
Game 1: Vs. RIT
RIT had been a team on the rise, and had beaten us in a game to five for the Binghamton championship game. The day had started out extremely cold, and even snowed at the start of the game. The game was tight throughout. Tempers flared when New Guy on RIT called Dbag Greg out on a controversial call. Greg was cutting towards the sideline, caught the disc, and then spun around to look up field. Check feet was called, and appeared to be out of bounds. Greg had taken approximately five steps before stopping from my vantage point downfield. However, New Guy apparently had seen it conclusively, and showed what Greg did calling him out. I don't believe that New Guy even made the initial call, but just saw doubt in Greg's face. Greg not knowing what he did, decided to drop the disc giving it to RIT.
Buffalo was up 9-8 when vets on both sides went out to take a break. A half an hour later, hard cap came on, and it was game point for Buffalo. The offense on the field was not talented for Buffalo by any means, but had a good solid defensive zone running. As a result, neither team could move it up the field. Personally, I was out of shape and just trying to keep up in the zone. I had no energy to cut. Someone on RIT called injury, and I took a sub as well letting Dan Twitchell on the field. As I rolled over on the ground, TJ hit Ttops for the game wining score. 10-8 Buffalo.
Game 2: Vs. Queens Kingston
Even though Queens had lost a lot of players, we still held them in very high esteem. At this point, we felt like we had little chance to win the game. This attitude was something that began to be addressed in the 2009 season. We lost the game 9-6, but I got the sense we never expected to win it and we were just happy to be close.
Game 3: Vs. St. Lawrence
The most annoying game I have ever played in. Nothing against St. Lawrence players as people, but it's one of the most annoying teams to play against. St. Lawrence players are scrappy, have wicked forehands, and hustle. Some of these guys do not look like they belong. From the start we tried a zone against them, but since they all have really good forehands, they slice it apart. They also intimated us during this game because they would layout into us. Their players would claim "If I touch the disc first, I can layout into you". As a result Dan Twitchell got tackled several times. I don't remember the score, but we lost a relatively close one ending our chance to go to Regionals. On the UPA website it claims we were tied 5th with them, but they moved on the in bracket to play Queens Kingston.
