Forward by BJ:
Buffalo came into this tournament hoping to make Regionals for the first time in team history. After losing last year, the team was committed and put the work in to prepare to capture the 5th bid.
Saturday:
Game 1: Vs. Bard
This was a warmup game for Buffalo as Bard usually plays coed. Buffalo easily wins 13-7.
Game 2: Vs. Rochester
Rochester was infamous for throwing their patented junk D and relying on their handle Doug Stenlik to lead the team to victory. Buffalo came into game with a several game losing streak to U of R, and had to first overcome that obstacle if they were going to advance in the tournament. With Queens Kingston looming in the third game, this would be a hard fought game for 2nd in the pool. With Cupcake on sidelines, Buffalo came out strong and took the lead early in the game. Ttops had his coming out party by sneaking behind the U of R zone. I estimate that he caught 7 deep passes from Feetch for scores. Dasky also added in a couple of deep catches, and even BJ contributed to some of the scoring by catching the game clinching point. Buffalo wins 15-13.
Game 3: Vs. Queens Kingston
Knowing that we have at least 2nd in the pool and will at least make the 2nd place bracket, Buffalo starts into the game with a weak effort. The attitude was that Queens was a far better team and that we should just prepare for our next game. Queens had some players who were talented enough to play club for GOAT, and took the game easily 15-6.
Game 4. Vs. Syracuse, "The Day We Made Syracuse Cry"
Those who were at this game will never forget it. It marks the point in Buffalo Ultimate where we started to believe we could make Regionals. Syracuse in the past, had been a perennial sectionals contender. They had lost several players making them more vulnerable, but still a solid team.
The game didn't find it's footing until the beginning of the 2nd half. I believe that Syracuse was up 8-6, and the game still felt within reach for Buffalo. It took a turn for the worst, in typical Buffalo fashion, as Syracuse went up 13-8. Sideline was down, the team was down. Feetch had come back for a 4th year to make Regionals, and at this point the situation did not look good.
At 13-8, we pulled it out of bounds, and decided to setup a play called Stats. I, BJ, was in the game and was taking the 2nd base or deep position. Otto was supposed to take the 2nd man cutting in, but ended up choosing the wrong side. I had to make sure that everyone had been accounted for before I chose my man. My man got the disc about 20 yards in front of me. At this point, I booked it to try to make it to him. A play I will personally never forget. I saw his gaze fixate deep, and he wound up to throw a forehand huck. I being about 5 yards to him at this point, kept running but put my hands straight up. The disc hit me in the fore arms, the origin of the term BJ D. The bruise was there for about a week afterwards. At this point being pumped up, I selected the position in the back of the stack for the play cats and dogs. I was supposed to go Left, but instead went right cutting off TJ. Feetch broke his man and I caught the disc to make it 13-9. I didn't play another point in the game.
Buffalo had a quick run of 4 points after that to make it 13-13. Syracuse then answered with a score of their own to make it 14-13. Buffalo came back with a score after both teams had crack at offense. Universe point. Grandpa, playing in his last year of eligibility showed his athleticism with a super man layout on Syracuse's big man. Earlier in the point, the same Syracuse player was fouled in the end zone by Grandpa. The foul was uncontested, but it was also in question whether he would have come down with the disc, as it slightly went out of bounds. At the time of those rules, the uncontested foul would have given Syracuse the disc on the goal line. During these rules, it may have been a score. With Syracuse on the goal line, Buffalo played shutdown D and forced them into a bad throw. Buffalo moved it up field, but turned it over. Dasky then had the infamous double stall, where he had called stall but was contested by the Syracuse player, so he just stalled him again. Buffalo takes over, and Feetch deliver a sweet break flick huck to Bobby in the end zone to win the game. Buffalo rushes the field, and Syracuse is stunned.
The Syracuse players were so stunned that some were crying while shaking hands. Afterwards, the team took this picture below, Syracuse players were still sitting on the ground with their hands over their heads for a half an hour. Such an unbelievable come back, that Cup Cake had left while Buffalo was losing. Buffalo advanced within the 2nd place bracket.
A snow storm blew through Oneonta Saturday Night, so Sunday's games were postponed. Next Sunday we went to Geneva.
Sunday:
Game 1: Vs. RPI
Skidmore decided not to show to the next day of games advancing Albany within the bracket. Albany was favored to beat the winner of our game with RPI giving the situation like this. If RPI lost, they would play Skidmore who would forfeit thus advancing them to the 5th place game for the 5th bid to Regionals. If we won, then lost to Albany, we would then play RPI again. Jmac from RPI came over offering to play this game as the game to go to Regionals if one of us were to win then lose to Albany. We took their offer and never looked back.
RPI had been improving over the years just like Buffalo had. They had a small group of experienced players that were highly competitive and running the team. Buffalo came out early grabbing a two point lead that we would not relinquish. The final point was Dasky throwing a hammer to Berri, sending GEH to their first Regionals appearance.
Game 2: Vs. Albany
The team had already started to celebrate at this point, and the Albany game was really over before it started. GEH did not consider Regionals seeding losing the game 15-11.
