Theodore Seuss Geisel - 2002 |
A word from your most grateful captain.
Not to be too emotional here or anything, but I must say this was the best
weekend I've had all semester. I've said this to most of you already, but
thank you for pitching in and helping with all the stuff I didn't even
delegate - like setting up fields, collecting garbage, getting warm-ups
started and even staying late with me at the championship game. It was a
wonderful weekend, I wish we all got to play more, but that's why we will
have more tournaments to attend.
Special thanks go out to Bret, James, Josh, Shoe and Pinto (heh heh) for
driving SA vans, and all the others who drove their own cars. Thanks also
to Bret for working out the money issues as quickly as I mentioned them,
and for spending 2.5 hours organizing a 13 team bracket Thursday night when
it ended up that we only needed a 12 team bracket; PSPS for lungs he gave
us the past two weeks, and the photos; Eric Herman for inviting foreigners
to shower at his apartment; Cupcake for coming up with some of the most
retarded cheers that left us all wondering what you were thinking, instead
of worrying about the game (whatever works); Pat for "holding it in";
Jordan for bringing Fans....the list goes on...
Friday evening I was about to dropkick my printer for eating up all the
school letterhead by not cooperating, but it alllll worked out in the end.
Saturday got started "on time" as far as frisbee events go (notoriously
late...) The only delay being other team's arrivals. We set a good
impression by having the fields set up, muscles warmed up and being fed up
(i mean we ate breakfast!). It was also great to have two teams of skill
and developing players. We have a lot to offer to this region as far as
growth and expansion goes...
Anyways, on with the real stuff - why we actually went to the tourney!!!!

Eggs
Our first game was a sweet warm up against Geneseo. The rest of the Eggs
team got their stuff together while i was still running around like a
stuttering school chile with a scratchy pencil and a lot of tall grown men
quizzing me about when they would get the chance to play even though they
showed up late too... We were in front of the "home" crowd of SA
videographers who volunteered their time (paid poorly enough to be called
"volunteers") to video a game that would normally have lasted 1:15, which
really got over in what they said was :37 minutes!! We were hot, buffalo.
HAM took an unfriendly beating against a strong Colgate (another team with
Penfield residents*) - a shocking awakening for wet-behind-the-ears frisbee
players regarding the pace of typical games and skill to be developed in
throwing and catching. All I got after the first game report were smiles,
laughter, and an overwhelming sense that everyone needed to run to the
bathroom to check the cleanliness of their pants.
* Hop on Pop, Eggs, Colgate, Buffalo Ultimate Club, Syracuse Doom, RPI,
Johns Hopkins, RIT, Vanderbilt, Boston University... ALL have Penfield
residents on their team...talk about a breeding ground...
Game 2 will stay in my memory as the strangest I've played in. NYC showed
up late to the second game after their first round bye, at which time three
points had been assessed for tardiness. After running two more points on
them (UB 5, NYC 0), Tom from NYC took a dive and lost the use of his
shoulder for two months. After a paused game Ham's momentum had faltered
and we dropped behind at 7pts to their 8. We worked on our handling, and
for the first time, began developing our hucking techniques that would
again be revived for the Cut'n'Paste game. We exchanged points with NYC to
lose at a hard cap of 11 due to the injury and late start. My feeling was
that as we got used to their style, we started showing where our athletic
ability ruled their's and showed we had the spirit to contend with this
team. We were right there in the running Eggs!
Ham scored their first point against Pittsburgh, the championship team i
might add! Their spirit reigned again, and Pitt commented on our team
size. Three cheers to HAM for cheering EVERY TEAM THEY PLAYED this
weekend! We'll soon be a team with disc AND literary skills!
Game 3
A much reduced, yet skilled Buffalo Ultimate Club was a hard fight between
brothers, former and future teammates and buffalonians. I played the most
during this game of any that day - which is why i can't remember a lot
about the specific game, but we played the toughest D I have seen us play
yet. Props to Bret, Brian Austin, Dixie, Cupcake and others for defensive
blocks, steals, and hard forces. One thing we needed to learn was to stay
in behind our man since they were seen to go deep on us too often,
especially with two or three big huckers on the field. We started forcing
the swing passes with a straight-on force and got a lot of hands on the
disc. We worked hard for every point.
Ham got a friendly instructional/clinic style of game with Grandpa. Hop on
Pop's eldest was Keith, 56, but was burning the best of our Bs. Ham was
shown the sportsmanship they deserved when HoP did an intentional botched
punt and allowed Hamies to them to jump on their backs and score a few
points. Wide were the smiles, sincere were the handshakes and proud was
the TD.
we ALL know how good the food was, and I will remember how good it was for
the next three weeks while I invite the stray cats inside to binge
themselves on ham and chicken. I wish I could throw a party this week so
we can all finish it off before it goes bad, but it's not happening. If
someone else would like to host, I would gladly give up the trays in my
fridge that are blatantly occupying beer space.
Party on Saturday night at the Greens was hosted by the owner, Jay Murgia
who plays for the Buffalo Ultimate Club team, and assisted HoP Sunday.
Thank him when you see him! Open kegs, patios, flipcup, pool, darts
Tournament brackets, disc-drinking and and fun conversation were all called
to order that night. I estimated 50 attendants!
Sunday, we combined our squads when we realized Clarkson wasn't going to
show up to play or ham squad. Instead of fogging up car window's and
complaining about headaches, I invited everyone to freeze in the rain on
the sidelines. Pittsburgh was a much stronger team than we anticipated,
and we started slowly. My head was spinning when they scored an
un-answered 10 points. Since we were scoreless, and unable to handle in
the drizzle and wind with a cup, we began hucking, which earned us 5 points
by the end of the game. See how crucial flow will be? I anticipate more
zone on both sides of the disc the next two weeks.
Pushing right through...
Ithaca has been the anti-arch-rival of UB for a good 3 years now. they are
a swell bunch of the world's friendliest. Can I tell you? they brought me
Micro-brewed "Ithaca" beer for hosting 7 of their most pampered (those who
didn't want to rough it in tents). We will enjoy their game and friendship
evermore. We were too interested in the fun we were having to take this
game as seriously as they took it. We need to regain focus in these
situations and show that we can bleed and have fun.
Again, our strength in numbers with work to our advantage these next two
weeks. We have even more to work on - especially in strong winds, hucking,
cutting, and defending man-to-man. Our Zone defense was a bigger asset
than we gave it credit for last week. As I've said, and as I begged for
while I was in the cup, we need the people behind us, and all around
(especially sideline observers!) to comment on the developing plays. Zone
is not anything that is ever stagnant, it takes much more adjustment than
man-to-man, but we've got it in us, and it showed when we used it. We will
not be afraid to use it.
Ahhh, a lengthy e-mail closeth, yet Be Aware, another email commeth...
Danse baby Danse...
THANKETH YEE EGG AND HAM
