About UB Men's Crew . . .
Crew first surfaced at UB in 1967. At that time, the team was coached by John Bennett, Sr. and rowed out of the West Side Rowing Club in downtown Buffalo. Unfortunately, the West Side Rowing Club burned to the ground in the early 1970's thus burying colligate rowing in Buffalo in its ashes.
After a great deal of interest from students on campus, rowing resurfaced once again at UB in 1987. At first, the team rowed out of the newly rebuild West Side Rowing Club until another boathouse was built on Tonawanda Creek. Now in a more convenient location, the men's team has began to develop into a solid colligate team. Having coached more than fifteen national team members at one time, Joe Krakowiak continues to share his rowing expertise with the UB community and his efforts are shown in the numerous state and national level medals that UB crews have acquired over the years.
While the Women's Crew team has moved beyond the realm of club status up to the Varsity level, the men's team continues to push forward and excel in the hopes of becoming a Varsity level team in the near future. |
