The team captured 9th place with a score of 1.5/4 even though it was forced to forfeit one of the four boards after the first round. Complete details are available on ICCL's website. We hope that UB Chess Club will make participation in this event an annual endeavor. ICCL also holds a number of other events during the year, including regular league play. We hope to participate in some of these events next year.
- 3/2/98 - The Niagara Falls Chess Club will be hosting the Niagara Falls Open Chess Tournament at the Echo Club on March 28th and 29th. The original information/application form contains all the information available about this tournament. Directions to the Echo Club are available here. (These are scanned in graphics and may take a few seconds to download on a slow connection.) Note: This event is not associated with the UB Chess Club in any way. We are simply informing you of the event in case you want to participate in it. If you are aware of other events that are taking place in the region, please let us know so that we can place that information on the site, making it easily accessible by everyone.
- 2/25/98 - Acting on the proposition of one of our members, we've joined the ICCL (Internet Collegiate Chess League). This league provides for an organized way to play chess on the internet. We are hoping to participate in the ICCL Championship Tournament which will be held on April 4th, 1998. Please visit the ICCL web site for additional information. If you would like to participate in the tournament, please let us know.
- 2/25/98 - Virginia Tech may be interested in setting up a Bughouse Tournament on FICS (Free Internet Chess Server). Nothing is definite yet, but if enough of you are interested, it is a possibility. If you would be interested in participating, please let us know.
- 2/20/98 - A more or less final meeting schedule with room assignments is now available. If any changes from this schedule occur, they will be noted in this section. Be sure to browse through the schedule since there will be times when we will not be meeting in our regular rooms from last semester.
- 2/3/98 - Free food and drink will be served at our meeting on Monday, February 9th, 1998 at 7:00pm in Student Union - 145E. Come on in, fill up, and kick off the new semester with a chess game!
- 1/26/98 - Be sure to note the change in room assignments this semester. We were unable to reserve the same room for the entire semester, so we'll be meeting in different rooms. A tentative meeting schedule for February is available. It will be finalized and completed shortly. We appologize for the inconvinience.
- 1/26/98 - Welcome Back! We hope all of you have enjoyed your break and are now rested and ready for more school and more chess! Our first meeting of the Spring semester will be held on Monday, February 2, 1998 at 8:00pm in Student Union - 145D. Hope to see you all there!
- Despite the delays, we still plan to order equipment in quantity and offer it to you for a reduced price. We have to place an order very soon so if you have not already expressed interest, please e-mail Kevin Bidtah as soon as possible. All information is not yet available but we must know how many sets we can order before discount levels and other details can be determined. NOTE: If you already told Kevin you are interested in purchasing equipment, you do not need to do it again.
Fall, 1997

- 1/26/98 - Vote for the top three chess players of all time! Walter Lucas Knoblauch of Brasil is conducting a world-wide survey of current players, asking for their opinion on the top three chess players of all time. - 1/26/98 - Monday, December 8th, 1997 will be our last meeting for the fall semester. There will be no official meeting on Thursday, December 11th, 1997. We encourage everyone to come and join us for the final meeting of the semester. Good luck to all of you on your finals and have a great break.

- 12/05/97 - There will be no meeting on Monday, December 1st, 1997 due to lack of a room. Meetings will resume at regular time and place on Thursday, December 4th, 1997.
- 11/26/97 - We now have a locker where all equipment is stored. This way any officer has access to all the equipment at any time. We hope that this will eliminate the unfortunate situation that occured a few times this semester, when all of the club's equipment was not available when needed. Note that if you have your own equipment, you are strongly encouraged to bring it anyway, just in case.
- 11/26/97 - We will be participating in the HELP Project on November 17-21, 1997. We would greatly appreciate your help. If you want to help or need additional information, please e-mail Lincoln Tan as soon as possible.
- 11/08/97 - Meeting Troubles - Due to midterms and miscommunication among officers, we were severely lacking in chess equipment during the last few meetings. We greatly appologize to those of you who came to those meetings and were unable to play as much as you would have liked. To remedy the problem, we are in the process of getting a locker to store all the equipment. We'll do our best to make sure that these situations do not occur again. Additionally, we urge you to bring your own chess equipment if you have it. This way you (and someone else) will always be assured of a game. Once again, please accept our appologies for the past few meetings.
