About Amateur Radio

Amateur radio is a technical hobby, practiced all around the world, that is recognized by the Federal Government as a valuable public service. Amateur radio operators, or "hams", have a long distinguished history of public service and technical innovation. Most importantly, hams have always had fun. Interested in learning more?

Ham operators are probably best known for their service in times of emergencies. One commonly hears of ham operators being the first to be able to get information into and out of disaster areas when all other communication services are knocked out.

Ham operators also engage in exciting radio activities such as satellite communications, radio contests, amateur television, and various operating awards. Hams do the hobby mostly for fun after all.

About the Society

The UB ARC is an ARRL affiliated club that has existed at UB for over 25 years. Currently, we are working on getting our station, WA2NPQ, back on the air after a several year absence. We are on the air with UHF/VHF (mostly local contacts, but as far as Toronto and Pennsylvania) communications and recently HF (worldwide power) too! Our most recent project that was done in the end of 1998 was the set up of the HF wire antenna. That was completed and then we had to get our HF rig working again. It was finally fixed in February and we are HF once again. We're talking to the world! So far we've contacted both England and Spain. Very recently we've also contacted Costa Rica, its fun and exciting to be worldwide again (updated on September 3rd, 1999). Late last year we contacted someone in the Balkans where NATO bombing had ripped through the land. Fortunatly he and his family are fine. If you can donate any spare equipment to the club (and earn a tax break in the process), please contact our President, Noah Levine, KC2DVT and let him know.
