I. MUTATION

Let me see you as you are

like an eye in a field of sight.

          Who made this eye?
          What made this? to see
            thing AND / NOT thing.

          Nothing made this to see.

          To see
          I made this eye
to see what is not seen
          not things
          but what holds them
that they are as they are
then it all changes, the eye
          given new sight, the hand
new touch, the tongue a new
          tongue and bones
reclothed in flesh which is the perfect
          flesh of the body released
from the image which enslaves me.

          The stiff body broken
to fit in the same room
          as the body and become
          gentler than he was
          and become kind to animals
          and become
          and care

                the animals know
          the smell of sickness
          and the ants know
          the body disrobed in earth
          being human, and bones
broken to fit in the body and earth
broken to fit in the earth,

I open my eyes and see the fact, state, or
quality of being of a manner, way, or method
of doing or acting, or of the
of, belonging to, or associated with a specific
          person, group, thing,
          or category, appearance, form or
          way of doing something or
the way in which a thing is done
          or happens in which
an underlying substance or a permanent
          way in which
          something can be viewed
by the mind or attribute of that one
          previously mentioned
          is manifested.

When the sign is made present,
          something disappears.
The reverse of this is also true.

              “Decline, for perfection, or completion”;
              “prepared, for closed or concluded”;
              “withhold, for present, reveal, give”
              something for nothing, the gift,
clearest blue sky, for the black
sun in the hole of the eye.

I am about 175 lbs. and
six feet tall; brown hair; blue eyes
          and my name is blank
          at the moment, imagine that
          someday the name
will not hold. But it’s hard to let go
of some things, and if I grow another arm
to take the place of my left arm—better yet
(because I am writing this with my right hand)
          I am growing another hand
to take the place of this hand

but the arm is not an arm
and the hand is like a dead hand
          or a painted one
          or one made of stone
          clinging to a stone
          wall of endless
          stone steps, leading
up to the art of the throat.
Now I am growing another throat
so that the poem will be more melodious
when read aloud—listen to this great sound
          of a new angel
          blown out of a horn
          blown out of a bullhorn
the body is dead. This is the difference
          between mouthing and saying
someone mouths, I bring it to life
          by indicating a hand here
in the mouth of the bullhorn.

I am afraid of this mouth,
              angel says,

I am afraid of that hand
              ink says

and if the words are well-known, but the grammar
          is yet to be explained
as when they make you take these things down,
but they don’t tell you what they mean
or when in building, there is a beginning, middle,
and end, the work is done, there is something
where there was nothing, but I am not sure
that it is, and when you make
it up, so that it makes
some kind of sense—but the I has failed
in the one thing it was sent to do.
