News 4/25/08:

Hey all!
We will be holding our annual end of the year happy hour at Allen Street Hardware at 5PM on May 10th. The event will occur following the departmental graduation ceremony as has so recently become our tradition. Allen Street Hardware is located at the end of Allen Street in the city (245 Allen Street, Buffalo, NY). Below is a link to Google maps with some directions from campus:

We have over $400 dollars left in the SGSA budget that must be spent so come out and have a few drinks on us if you can make it. I will also make sure that we have plenty of appetizers, etc. If you have yet to visit hardware and curious as to what kind of place it is, you can check out their website:

As always, I will be happy to answer any questions and/or respond to comments.

Sociology Graduate Student Association Mission Statement

The following four statements are an outline of the mission of the Sociology Graduate Student Association of the State University of New York at Buffalo, as approved by its members via the organizations constitution.

    1. To promote communication and understanding among graduate students in Sociology, between graduate students and faculty in Sociology, and between graduate students in Sociology and other parties of the University community.
    2. To define common problems and objectives for graduate students in Sociology.
    3. To represent and promote the interests of the graduate students in Sociology vis-à-vis the faculty, administration, and other parties of the University.
    4. To provide an organ for social expression for graduate students in Sociology.

To accomplish the aforementioned, an elected representative of the Sociology Graduate Student Association meets with the Sociology department graduate director and the department chair to communicate any concerns related to the graduate curriculum, departmental policies, and the department’s relationship to the wider University community.  We also keep graduate students, faculty and the larger University community informed of the activities of the Sociology Graduate Student Association, by publicizing events and meetings of the association throughout the university.

The Sociology Graduate Student Association disseminates the scholarly work of its members by publishing an informal journal that informs graduate students, faculty, and the University community of the type of research that is conducted by sociology grad students.  The SGSA also assist’s graduate student’s in their professional socialization by helping to fund graduate student conference presentations at the regional and national level.

To establish a collegial environment within the department, the SGSA sponsors informal gatherings of graduate students, department faculty and staff where all parties can interact outside the formal setting of department seminars, SGSA meetings, and departmental meetings.
