SGSA Meeting

December 1, 1998

Present at meeting: Diane Bessel, President Bin Bin Tan, Vice President; Don Matteson, Treasurer; David Blake, Secretary; Paul Fuller, Gretchen Erb, Joyce Joyce, Lisa Zurn, Suzette Cote, Sheri Crosby. Amy Hequembourg.

The meeting was called to order at 5:25pm.

Diane announced that monies have been secured for the SGSA Conference to be held on March 19th 1998. Grants and other monies have been given through the University Community Initiative, SGSA, UB. Sociology Department, and the Office of the Vice President of Public Service and Urban Affairs

Information on the new graduate curriculum is now located at the SGSA Web Site.

Diane is still collecting information on sociology graduate students’ suggestions for new personnel needs. Anyone with ideas for specific areas of study. or faculty persons who you would like to see join the department, please contact Diane. This initiati ve is being undertaken at the request of Dr. Gottdiener.

Diane has been in contact with Edgar Mills. Anyone who is interested in working at the Eastern Sociological Society Conference in Boston, MA on March 4,5. 6.7. please see Diane. Dr. Mills is offering workers free parking at the conference, ESS membership and registration.

The department will sponsor its annual Holiday party on December 15th, from Noon until 3pm. The party will take place this year in the first floor atrium SGSA voted to contribute $30.00 to the social.

Diane brought up discussion on capital equipment for the SGSA. Members were invited to consider equipment that they would like to sec purchased for use by members. A transcriber, syllabi sets (reading lists, activities, etc. for various teaching classes), method and theory books and videos were primary equipment suggested for purchase. Diane is putting a list of various theory and methods books that we might purchase for SGSA. up on the board in the sociology lounge. She has asked people to mull over the list, and write down the texts that they believe SGSA should consider purchasing. Monies for these purchases will be requested in grant form from GSA.

Diane reminded members of the professional seminar to take place on Friday, December 4th. at 2pm. The presentation is on preparing curriculum vitae.

A discussion of whether to involve SGSA in social outreach for the holiday season ensued. It was decided to invite members to bring a gift to the holiday party, to be donated to the 'News Neediest’ program. This giving is an optional act to be decided by each member. There is no obligation.

The meeting adjourned at 6:15pm.
