| Qualified Academic Rank in the Department of Psychology
Research, Clinical, and Adjunct Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor of Psychology Excerpt from Faculty / Staff Handbook: "Qualified titles should not be considered honorary but must be earned." Excerpts from College of Arts and Sciences Guidelines on Qualified and Joint Academic Appointment: "The credentials of a holder of a qualified rank should be substantially equivalent to those for a regular academic appointment. Appointments and promotions involving qualified rank should be handled with the same care, using the same criteria and the same standards that are applied to regular academic ranks. Thus, a Research or Adjunct Assistant Professor is generally expected to have extensive experience beyond the doctorate. A qualified appointment at, or promotion to, the rank of Associate or Professor requires Provostal approval. A qualified appointment at, or promotion to, the rank of Professor should be accompanied by a minimum of four letters from external evaluators. Each appointment is made for a fixed, renewable term of no more than three years. Evidence of significant involvement in the intended departmental functions (e.g., research grants, publications, student mentorship, teaching activities) should be an important factor in the consideration of a reappointment to a qualified rank." Department of Psychology procedure: Areas nominate candidates for Qualified Academic Rank. Candidates' resumes are available for inspection by department faculty, who then vote by ballot. Department chair forwards resume and vote to CAS Dean. Department of Psychology privileges for persons holding Qualified Academic Rank (reviewed by Policy and Planning Committee, November, 1999): 1. From Faculty / Staff Handbook: Qualified ranks are used primarily to designate faculty members whose primary contributions will be in one area of academic activity. For example, the "Research" prefix is appropriate for faculty members whose activities are primarily in research; "Clinical" for those teaching in a clinical environment as part of an established academic program; "Adjunct" for those with appropriate professional qualifications who perform teaching or research in connection with an academic program. These positions may be full time, part time, or voluntary. The proper descriptive prefix should precede the rank, i.e., Clinical Assistant Professor. . . . Lecturer is also a qualified title used primarily for appointments restricted to teaching. These appointments do not lead to consideration for continuing appointment.
