Graduate
Student Body
In recent years the number of graduate students in the department
has stood at approximately sixty. About half of the graduate student
population is made up of domestic students, with the other half
coming primarily from Asia but also from Latin America, Africa,
and Europe. This large and variegated student body makes for a
lively cross-cultural exchange both inside and outside the classroom.
The graduate
students participate in departmental governance by membership
on the Executive Council. In addition to this, students are given
the opportunity to serve on a variety of departmental committees,
such as Admissions and Standards, Colloquium, and Publicity.
All graduate
students are automatically members of the Graduate Linguistics
Association (GLA), which is part of the university-wide Graduate
Student Association (GSA). The GLA is allotted a sum of money
each year from the GSA to purchase tape recorders, computer equipment,
and books and journals for the department's library, and to sponsor
social events. Travel money is also made available for students
to present papers at out-of-town conferences.
The department
encourages students to begin publishing and presenting papers
as part of their graduate training, and various forums are available
within the department to facilitate this process. The department
sponsors a colloquium series featuring speakers from outside the
department, as well as members of the department. Students are
welcome to present completed research or work still in progress
to the department as part of this series. The department also
issues a working papers series, which publishes both faculty and
student research.
