Theatre
Artpark,
overlooking the Niagara River Gorge in Lewiston, offers
a changing bill of ballet, Broadway hits, opera and jazz
in this indoor/outdoor theater. Wandering minstrels
and mimes and a wide range of arts and crafts exhibits make
Artpark an ideal excursion. Studio Arena, in downtown
Buffalo, offers a complete season of repertory theater.
Shea's Buffalo is a magnificent theater built on a grand
scale rivaling any theater in New York City. It regularly
hosts traveling stage shows, ballet troupes, popular artists,
etc. The Shaw Festival is held in the quaint town
of Niagara-on-the-Lake which houses three repertory theaters
that produce the works of George Bernard Shaw and his contemporaries.
Music
and the Arts
The
Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra performs in the acoustically
renowned Kleinhans Music Hall. The Music Hall offers a host
of entertainment including jazz and country performers.
Buffalo is also rich in its bars and cafes that feature
good jazz, rock and folk music. The University recently
opened a fine arts center that increases entertainment opportunities
in music and theater. The renowned Albright-Knox Art
Gallery features its permanent collection of contemporary
art and is the site of numerous traveling exhibits.
The Allentown Art Festival is held yearly and is the largest
outdoor art festival in the country. The city hosts
a variety of ethnic and cultural festivals throughout the
year highlighted by the very popular Taste of Buffalo.
Sports
Collegiate
level athletics are improved by the University's recent
NCAA rating as I/AA. This increases the area's spectator
sports by bringing in some of the country's top collegiate
athletic teams in basketball and football.
Professional
football and hockey are represented by the Buffalo Bills
and the Buffalo Sabres. AAA baseball is represented
by the Buffalo Bisons. The city also houses teams
in Arena Football, Soccer and Lacrosse
Leisurely
sailing or relaxing on the many beaches of Lake Erie and
Lake Ontario is only a short drive from downtown Buffalo.
Hiking or backpacking through the surrounding woodlands
and parks is available during all seasons. Picnicking
along the Niagara River Gorge is a scenic delight.
Skating, tobogganing, cross-county or downhill skiing is
available within 45 minutes of the city.
