Training Tomorrow's Surgical Leaders Today.
The Department of Surgery is composed of dynamic clinical and basic science faculty with diverse experience and clinical skills that help cultivate today’s residents into future surgery leaders. We pride ourselves on ensuring excellence in the department’s three mission areas: patient care, research, and education.
Our faculty utilizes state-of-the-art laboratories to pioneer approaches and to conduct innovative research; which is then translated into clinical practice. The Department of Surgery is dedicated to providing high quality surgical education through comprehensive clinical exposure, research at the forefront of medicine, and mentoring by physicians and scientists devoted to their craft.
The General Surgery Residency is a fundamental part of the department and the Jacob’s School of Medicine. The Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the hospitals affiliated with it have developed the Graduate Medical Dental Education Consortium of Buffalo. For medical students, we offer a junior clerkship and many senior electives in the Consortium hospitals. The Department and Consortium offers residencies in General Surgery and Vascular Surgery, and Fellowships in Colon-Rectal Surgery and Vascular Surgery.
There are more than 120 faculty and 70 residents and fellows enrolled in the commitment to medical education. Our clinical faculty offers comprehensive surgical care in these areas:
