Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship
The University at Buffalo Sports Medicine Fellowship is a one-year ACGME-accredited program (the only accredited program in New York State) sponsored by the University at Buffalo Department of Family Medicine and UB Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine. Each year, two fellows will be accepted into the program. The fellowship welcomes applicants with backgrounds in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics. This program is designed to provide comprehensive experience that will enable the fellow to apply primary care medical training to the assessment, treatment and management of sports injuries and musculoskeletal medicine. It involves active participation in providing coverage for athletes at various levels of competition, as well as preparation for obtaining a Certification of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in sports medicine.
In addition to the primary focus of learning musculoskeletal medicine skills, fellows also focus on the systemic and general medical concerns of athletes, such as exercise-induced asthma, nutritional guidance, and prevention and rehabilitation of athletic injuries via appropriate training and rehabilitation therapy methods.
Fellows in this program will work with faculty at UB Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine and the Division I athletic teams at the University at Buffalo, and will follow a panel of continuity patients in their primary care specialty.

Adult Lower Extremity Joint Reconstruction Fellowship
This fellowship provides orthopaedic surgeons excellent training in primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty, including complex reconstructions. There is substantial emphasis on conservative reconstruction with regard to proximal tibial, distal femoral and hip osteotomy procedures. Fellows receive academic appointments with the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and enjoy educating orthopaedic residents and medical students. The Program Director, Dr. Kenneth Krackow, is a full-time professor, well published, and internationally-renown.
Among the strengths noted in its recent ACGME reaccreditation were the Program’s emphasis on education over service, and the variety of clinical volume to which fellows are exposed. Opportunities readily exist for clinical and laboratory research projects, with accomplished support staff available to assist. Facilities include elaborate operating-room video; computer database automation; and gait and kinematic study capabilities.
The cost of living is very reasonable in the Western NY area, with the academic and civic communities both culturally diverse and socially stimulating. Winter temperatures are typically 20-30 degrees, not bitterly cold, with summer months comfortably warm and sunny.
To be considered, an applicant must have completed an ACGME-accredited orthopaedic residency program, and be eligible for NY State Licensure.
This fellowship is ACGME accredited.
This fellowship participates in the match program.
