- MEDICAL
SCIENTIST TRAINING PROGRAM (MSTP)
The Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) of the School of
Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the State University of New
York at Buffalo provides highly talented students with an opportunity
to combine intensive scientific training with medical school experience.
The MSTP curriculum is designed to integrate both a rigorous clinical
and research experience throughout the program and to provide
the student with the skills needed for an academic career path.
The primary purpose of the MSTP is to develop physician scientists
that will become leaders in basic, translational or clinical research,
and in clinical medicine in medical schools and teaching hospitals.
This program is directed toward helping the student prepare for
a career in which they will excel as both an investigator and
a clinical educator.
A career in academic medicine is expected to be the choice of
MSTP students, with continuing involvement in the practice of
medicine. The Medical Scientist Training Program, accordingly,
places emphasis upon the humanitarian as well as the scientific
aspects of human disease and its treatment.
Normally, the combined degree program is completed within a span
of seven to eight years. It is a demanding program, and the competition
for admission is vigorous. Consequently, the credentials of successful
applicants are expected to surpass those typical of the applicants
to either the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences or the
Graduate School of the University at Buffalo. In evaluating a
candidate for the MSTP, evidence of a sincere and enduring enthusiasm
for scientific investigation is an essential qualification.
An MSTP student receives both tuition waiver
and a stipend throughout the duration of the
program, provided a satisfactory academic standing
is maintained. The current minimum stipend is
$20,000 per annum. Discussion is under way to
increase this amount for Fall 2007.
To apply for the MSTP, interested students should follow the standard procedure for the AMCAS application to the Medical School indicating their intent to apply to the Medical Degree/Ph.D. program. Our office will contact you when we receive your hard copy AMCAS report to verify your intent in applying to the combined program. Evaluation of applications shall include consideration of the candidate’s statement of career objectives, prior research experience, letters of support, (in addition to the medical school’s letters of support, we required at least one letter of recommendation supporting your participation in research activities. After review, the Admissions Committee’s invitation for an interview or final decision will be mailed to the applicants.
If you have filed your AMCAS application and have NOT indicated your intent to apply to the combined program, please contact the Office of Research and Biomedical Education, 716-829-3398 or contact Arlene Albrecht at ama7@buffalo.edu. Deadline date for applying to the MSTP is December 1st. However, applicants are encouraged to notify the Office of Research and Biomedical Education of your intent as soon as possible.
