Sports Medicine

 

Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship

The Sports Medicine Fellowship is a one-year accredited program sponsored in conjunction with the University at Buffalo Department of Family Medicine and the UB Sports Medicine Institute. Each year two fellows will be accepted into the program. The fellowship welcomes applicants with backgrounds in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics.

This program is designed to provide comprehensive experience that will enable the fellow to apply primary care medical training to the assessment, treatment and management of sports injuries and involves active participation in providing coverage for athletes at various levels of competition, as well as preparation for obtaining a certification of added qualifications by the Board of Family Practice in Sports Medicine.

In addition to the primary focus of learning musculoskeletal examination skills, fellows also focus on systemic and general medical concerns of athletes such as exercise-induced asthma, nutritional guidance, and prevention and rehabilitation of athletic injuries via appropriate training therapy methods.

Fellows in this program participate will work with faculty at the UB Sports Medicine Institute, as well as following a panel of continuity patients at the Family Medicine Center.

University Sports Medicine is the only facility serving Western New York to offer total comprehensive treatment for a wide range of sports related conditions and injuries. University Sports Medicine is a division of the Department of Orthopedics, State University of New York at Buffalo, and offers complete, comprehensive care to the injured athlete or active individual, from recreational athletes to those at the professional level. Our team of orthopedic surgeons, primary care sports medicine specialists, athletic/personal trainers, and physical therapists dedicates itself to providing the cutting edge in care and treatment for the entire spectrum of orthopedic and sports related injuries.

University Sports Medicine is currently the team physicians for University at Buffalo NCAA Division I Athletics, Erie Community College and the Buffalo Public School System.

This program is fully accredited by the ACGME and candidates who complete the Fellowship are eligible to sit for the CAQ exam in Sports Medicine.
