Graduates and current
participants of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) Educator Program
are eligible to participate in the SUNY at Buffalo Primary Care
Master Educator Program. This is a collaborative program by the
Departments of Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics.
This program is funded from July 2008 to June 2011 by a Faculty
Development in Primary Care Grant from the Bureau of Health Professions,
Health Services and Research Administration, U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services.
Program
Goal:
To enable primary care faculty in the disciplines of Family Medicine,
General Internal Medicine and General Pediatrics to develop their
abilities in producing works of scholarship related to medical education.
Program
Objectives—participating faculty will:
• Continue to build skills in teaching effectiveness, curricular
innovation, learner assessment and evaluation of educational program
effectiveness.
• Receive training that will enable them to further develop
their RCP Education Initiatives into works of medical education
scholarship suitable for publication and regional or national presentation.
• Share what they have learned through the RCP Educator Program
by presenting this material to other UB primary care faculty at
venues such as our collaborative Thursday morning Faculty Development
Workshop/Primary Care Research Forum and their respective department
meetings and Grand Rounds.
Program
Content and Resources:
• Training: Participating faculty will attend
a one-hour workshop every other Thursday morning from 7:30-8:30
on teaching and research skills related to medical education. They
will have opportunities to network and discuss their medical education
projects and will attend seminars on medical education research
skills such as (1) selecting a topic or research question, (2) searching
and reviewing the medical education literature on the selected topic,
(3) planning and executing a medical education research project,
and (4) preparing their work for presentation and publication. CME
credit is available for these workshops, which will be held at the
Department of Family Medicine Residency Classroom in the SUNY Clinical
Center on the campus of Erie County Medical Center, 462 Grider Street,
Buffalo 14215.
• Mentoring: Participating faculty will be
matched with a faculty mentor who can assist them in developing
the skills required to complete their project.
• Pilot project funds: Each participant can
apply for up to $2000 to fund their projects and will also receive
assistance in applying for external funding to continue their medical
education research efforts if desired.
• Project assistance: Participating faculty
will receive support from the Department of Family Medicine’s
Primary Care Research Institute staff in planning and executing
their projects. This support will reduce the faculty participant’s
time required for research tasks such as obtaining journal articles,
executing surveys, collecting and analyzing data.
Program Timeline:
This program will train two groups of six primary care faculty.
The first group will attend the program from January 2009 to June
2010. The second group will attend from July 2010 to June 2011.
