Welcome to the Faculty Development section of The University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences web site. The Primary Care Research Institute (PCRI), is a transdisciplinary research unit dedicated to improving health, patient care and medical education by encouraging scholarship in primary care.
Our Mission is to focus on the improvement and advancement of 5 areas including:
| Leadership |
Clinical Practice |
| Teaching |
Academic Career Management |
| Scholarship |
|
Our Vision:
To develop a community of faculty engaged in creative activities for furthering their work in all of these 5 areas;
To develop dynamic faculty which brings value to the university, residents, students and patients;
To develop faculty who would be presenting their work at a national and regional level;
To provide essential access to resources and facilitation of training of the 5 areas.
The Department's Faculty Development Program consists of three components:
Primary Care Research Forum – a weekly morning workshop series with the purpose of offering various formats for scholarly presentations, peer review, idea generation or brainstorming sessions, or instruction by participating faculty. Formats include presentations of findings from completed research, theoretical and methodological issues, or budding ideas for a research project, grant, or manuscript in need of nurturing.
Master Educator Program – a program with the goal of enabling primary care faculty in the disciplines of Family Medicine, General Internal Medicine and General Pediatrics to develop their abilities in producing works of scholarship related to medical education. The objectives are to:
- Continue to build skills in teaching effectiveness, curricular innovation, learner assessment and evaluation of educational program effectiveness.
- Receive training that will enable them to further develop their Royal College of Physician's Education Initiatives into works of medical education scholarship suitable for publication and regional or national presentation.
- Share what they have learned through the RCP Educator Program by presenting this material to other UB primary care faculty at venues such as our collaborative Thursday morning Faculty Development Workshop/Primary Care Research Forum and their respective department meetings and Grand Rounds.
Quarterly Faculty Meetings – The quarterly faculty meetings of the UB Department of Family Medicine are required attendance by all staff with a faculty level appointment including MDs, DOs, PhDs and those at the Master's level. At each meeting the Chair reviews major departmental activity since the last meeting, the Chief Administrative Officer reviews the departmental finances and reports are presented by the Vice Chairs of Research, Medical Student Education and Graduate Education. A review of coding compliance and a presentation on a topic of interest in teaching or clinical skills is presented.
