The
Department of Family Medicine is a dynamic, exciting place that
has received national recognition. In addition to resident education,
the department's mission encompasses medical student education,
fellowship training, patient care, and research.
Our university system
is organized on the consortium model for graduate medical education,
with programs that are university directed, yet located in community
hospitals-thus blending the advantages of the university with the
benefits of the community. At the University at Buffalo, you select
the milieu that fulfills your personal educational plan. Each hospital
collaborating with our university department has a characteristic
identity and mission.
The Department of Family
Medicine is a leader, an innovator, and an advocate for change in
the medical school curriculum. Our courses are student centered
and emphasize training in ambulatory sites and problem-based learning
methods. Family Medicine residents play a central role in bedside
and office-based teaching. The residency program curriculum is designed
to include all the required elements for learning comprehensive
and continuous care in a wide range of community hospital settings.
