1. Lectures

The course in Gross Human Anatomy is conducted with both lecture and laboratory sessions.  Lectures are Tuesdays and Fridays at 8:00 AM  in Butler Auditorium.   You are expected to arrive for lecture ON TIME.  Lecture notes are provided in this syllabus.

2. Laboratories

Laboratories are held Mondays and Thursdays from 9:00 AM until 12:00 N and Fridays 1 PM to 4 PM in the Gross Anatomy Laboratory (333 CFS). There will be 8 students at each cadaver. These 8 will be further divided into 4 groups of 2 students; you will receive your table and group assignments on the first day of lab.  Each group of 2 will be given dissection instructions (called a "prosection") during the laboratory and will have several laboratory sessions to complete the assignment.  The group will then present their work to the other 6 at the table in a manner similar to that used when a physician presents a case to his or her colleagues.  Following their presentation, the group will then receive a new assignment.  This means that on any given day, there will be four different dissections in progress on each cadaver.  Cooperation among groups is, therefore, a necessity.  Throughout the semester there generally will be one presentation and one prosection during each laboratory. Presentations are scheduled for the 9:00 - 10:00, 1:00 - 2:00 portion of each laboratory session; prosections follow immediately.  A day-by-day schedule of each dissecting group is provided as part of this syllabus. (NOTE:  Medical students are in the lab on alternate mornings and you are NOT allowed in the lab during Medical class)

            IT IS THE ABSOLUTE RESPONSIBILITY OF EACH STUDENT TO ATTEND PROSECTIONS, PERFORM DISSECTIONS AND MAKE PRESENTATIONS ON SCHEDULE.  FAILURE TO SATISFY THIS RESPONSIBILITY CAN RESULT IN FAILURE OF THE COURSE, REGARDLESS OF EXAMINATION GRADES.

            The following regulations are imposed to satisfy requirements set forth by OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration): You are required to wear a laboratory coat (or "scrubs") and closed shoes (no sandals) in the laboratory.  You must also wear vinyl or latex gloves while dissecting.  Protective eyewear is recommended. Additional rules of conduct for the laboratory will be discussed on the first day.

            The laboratory will be available for extra study time.  Open laboratory hours are 5:00 PM - 10:00 PM  Monday, and Wednesday, 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM on Saturday.  These times are for study ONLY, not for finishing dissections or doing presentations. During the first week of classes, each student will be given a plastic card which will operate the lock on the laboratory door.  A deposit of $10.00 is required for the card.  The lock will only operate during the specified hours.

3. Grading

Grades will be determined on the basis of three written examinations, worth 200 points each. Each exam will be conducted in the laboratory and will consist of a number of stations. At each station, students will identify labeled structures and be asked to write short answers to accompanying questions. Two problem based learning experiences will be included. First, at least one of the laboratory stations will consist of a live station at which students must determine the anatomical basis of symptoms presented by a staff member. The second experience will involve a case study in multiple choice format.

             To allow for your adjustment to this type of course, the first exam is weighted less than the second and third.  That is, the first exam is worth 20% of your grade, the second worth 40% and the third worth 40%.  Letter grades will be assigned based upon your final numerical average using the following schedule:

                                                 A = 90% or higher

                                                 B = 80% - 89%

                                                C = 65% - 79%

                                                 F = Less than 65%

              The format for the course which I have presented above may appear confusing at first reading.  Be assured that it will all become clear as we get through the first few days of class.  We look forward to spending this semester with you.  Relax and enjoy this introduction to the fascinating subject of Gross Human Anatomy.
