The Gene Expression Core is a recently
opened Core Facility which is available to investigators at
both SUNY and Roswell Park and their collaborators. The Core
offers Affymetrix GeneChip Technology as a core facility service.
GeneChips are oligonucleotide arrays which have up to 16 -25
bp unique sequence oligos representing each gene. This is
a very powerful tool which allows a genome scan of an organism
in a single hybridization because Genechip expression arrays
presently represent the most comprehensive transcript coverage
of several organisms genomes. The chips are primarily
used to monitor gene expression levels in tissues in a semi-quantitative
manner. The most common use is the comparison of 2 or more
samples (i.e. tumor vs. normal or treated vs. normal) or temporal
studies. There are a wide variety of chips presently available
from Affymetrix representing genes from a number of different
organisms as well as a few chips for examining specific diseases.
