Residents in University at Buffalo
(UB) sponsored training programs, with the exception
of those in positions funded through the Federal government
or New York State, receive a uniform salary and benefit
package based on their level of training. These residents
are employed by University Medical Resident Services,
P.C. (UMRS) or University Dental Resident Services,
P.C. (UDRS).
The uniform salary and benefit package is reviewed
annually by the Resident Salary and Benefit Committee
which is comprised of GME staff, hospital representatives,
Program Directors, and a UB Resident Committee Representative.
UB and its affiliated hospitals have committed to
maintaining salary levels at the average of similar
institutions within New York State when adjusted for
cost of living differences. Salary comparison information
from other New York State Institutions and regional
information published by the Association of American
Medical Colleges (AAMC) as well as cost of living data
and comparisons are reviewed annually by GME staff.
The benefit package for residents is also reviewed
annually and compares quite favorably with other institutions.
UB and its affiliated hospitals have been successful
in maintaining a benefit plan that requires no contribution
from residents for single or family coverage while
simultaneously improving benefits. In recent years,
dental, vision, and life insurance coverage have been
added and/or improved. The long term disability benefit
exceeds basic requirements and offers guaranteed conversion
upon graduation at significantly discounted rates.
Graduating residents have a choice of providers and
plans available that include the specialty definition
of disability, a no-decline offer and unisex rates.
Individual counseling on matters pertaining to employment
is available from Cheryl Kishbaugh, Associate Dean
for GME. Individual counseling on matters pertaining
to employee benefits is available from Donna Cummiskey,
Director of GME Resource Management.
The UB Office of Graduate Medical Education also sponsors
several programs annually on financial planning offered
by local and national experts and an elective on the
subject has been added to the Incoming Resident Week
orientation. |

The University at Buffalo (UB) sponsors sixty-three
(63) resident and fellowship training programs. University
Medical Resident Services, P.C. (UMRS) and University
Dental Resident Services (UDRS) are the largest employers
of residents in UB sponsored programs. Veterans Administration
WNY Health Services (VAWNYHS) and Roswell Park Cancer
Institute (RPCI) also employ residents in UB sponsored
programs.
