The mission of the Consortium Residents Committee (CRC), which is comprised of an elected resident from each program, is to represent the residents in matters related to all aspects of residency education and serve as a liaison to the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC).
As the newly elected Chair of the committee, it is my pleasure to help further this mission. In the past years, some of the resident issues negotiated and ultimately achieved were:
- Salary increases for residents
- Parking & safety improvements (ongoing)
- Changes in meal reimbursement
During the first several meetings this year, current resident concerns included:
- Call room conditions
- Improved job seminars for graduating residents
- Lack of internet access at ECMC
- USMLE Step 3 tutoring for residents
- Resident parking and safety
My personal interests relate to developing resident teaching skills to help improve the educational experiences of both medical students and junior residents. I have taken the first steps toward implementing, what I hope will become, a formal curriculum to improve resident teaching proficiency. A large University program like UB has an obligation to foster academic excellence. Residents, as faculty appointed clinical instructors, are responsible for a large portion of clinical education. However, we have received virtually no formal training on how to teach effectively. With the help of several attending physicians, residents, and the office of GME--we hope to bring forth higher standards of teaching and academic excellence .
The CRC represents you, the resident. Please bring any concerns related to your wellbeing or quality of education or to our attention, so that we may help improve future residency training for all of us.
Thank you
