Using the Assignment Tool
The Assignment tool is used to add Assignments to your course. The Assignment tool is different from the course menu item called Assignments.
- After an assignment is added to a Content Area, students may access the assignment, complete it in a separate file, and send it back to the instructor.
- After a student completes and submits an assignment the instructor may access this file in the Grade Center.
Creating an Assignment
- Select Control Panel. In the Content Area, select where to place the Assignment.
- Use the drop-down menu on the right to select Assignment.
- Click Go (located next to the drop down menu).
- Type in a name for the Assignment. Do NOT include the following "special characters" in the name of the Assignment: !, @, #, $, %, &, *, > | or ().
- Enter the total possible points and instructions for the Assignment.
- Submit.
Note: Students often incorrectly use the Save button instead of the Submit button. Please tell students to use Submit when their assignments are complete.
Downloading Individual Assignment Files
- Select Control Panel > Grade Center (under Assessment).
- Locate the assignment for a particular student.
- Click ! to review the assignment.
- Click View.
- Select the file you want to view from the User’s Work section.
Be aware that the Clear Attempt button in the Assignment Information section will delete the assignment submitted by the student, reset the grade and delete your notes and feedback. You should only select the Clear Attempt button if you want the student to be able to re-submit the assignment.
Downloading Multiple Assignments
- Select Control Panel > Grade Center (under Assessment).
- Click on the title of the Assignment you wish to download.
- Select the Item Download link on the Item Options page.
- Click the check box next to students' names. You may select multiple students or use Check All.
- Click Submit.
- Select Download assignments now.
- Click Save. The filename defaults to the Assignment name, and the file will be saved as a ZIP file. When unzipped, you will have a small text file that contains: Student Name, Assignment Name, Date and Time submitted, Current Grade, and Comments from the student. You will also have any attached files that the student submitted.
Entering Grades for an Assignment
- Select Control Panel > Grade Center (under Assessment).
- Click ! on the student row under the Assignment title.
- Enter the Grade in the input text box. You must change the ! to a numerical value even if you are using Complete/Incomplete or Pass/Fail for the grade.
- Click Modify Comments if you wish to add comments.
Providing assignment feedback
- Use the Feedback to User section for assignment feedback for the student. You can attach a file by clicking Browse to select and upload a file.
- You may enter private notes in the Instructor Notes section. Notes and files that you place in this section are only available to you.
