Creating Tests

Tests are useful for evaluating student knowledge. Instructors assign point values to each question on a test. Many question formats are available (e.g., multiple choice, matching, essay). Completed tests are submitted for grading; some question types need manual grading. Results are recorded in the Gradebook.

Incorporating a test into your course involves a multi-step process that includes the following steps:

Create a test

  1. Go to Control Panel > Test Manager (under Assessment).
  2. Select Add Test.
  3. Enter a name, description, and instructions for your test.
  4. Click Submit and the Test Canvas appears.

Note: It is possible to create a test in a content area. In Edit View, choose +Test from the items along the top of the screen.

Add questions to a test

You have the option to use Test Creation Settings to modify default point values for questions, add images and links, etc.

  1. Select a question type from the Add drop-down menu.
  2. Select Go next to the drop down menu.
  3. Follow the directions that appear for each question type at the top of the screen.
  4. In the Question Text field, enter the question you want to ask.
  5. Assign a Point Value to your question, if not the default will be used.
  6. Follow specific directions for entering answers for each question type.
  7. Click Submit.
  8. To add additional questions, repeat steps 1-6.
  9. After all questions have been added, select OK.

Note: You can reorder the questions using the numbers on the left.

The Test Manager page will show that your test exists on the list of tests. You can still modify the test because it has not been made available and only exists in the Test Manager. Once a test has been created in the Test Manager, it can reside there indefinitely.

Add a test to content area

When you are finished adding questions and the test is ready, you need to add it to a content area and make it available in order for your students to take it.

  1. Go to Control Panel > Click on the Content Area where you want to add the test.
  2. Click the +Test icon along the top of the screen and the Add Test page will open.
  3. Select the test you want to add from the box.
  4. Click Submit.
  5. When the Test Added page appears, click OK.

Note: At this point, you can still choose to make your test available at a later date. If you want to make the test available immediately, follow the steps below.

Make a test available

To make a test available now, choose Modify the Test Options.

  1. Under Make the link available, select Yes.
  2. You can select other options if desired.
  3. Click Submit, then OK on the next two screens.

To make a test available later, access the Modify the Test Options page as follows:

  1. In the Control Panel select the content area where the test has been placed.
  2. Click Modify next to the appropriate test.
  3. Select Modify the Test options and select Yes next to Make the link available.
  4. Click Submit, then OK.

View test results

  1. Go to Control Panel > Gradebook.
  2. Select the title of the Gradebook test item you want to view.
  3. Select Assessment Attempt Details.
    • This page will show responses to test questions.

Note: Click on a Gradebook item for an individual student to view test submissions, manually grade a submission, or adjust a grade.

Download test results

The results of tests may be downloaded for statistical analysis. (Analysis is done through another application, such as Microsoft Excel.) For further information check the Blackboard manual.
