Adding Video and Audio Content to your Course via UB Streaming Servers
Centrally-supported and departmental streaming servers are available to faculty and staff. Contact your School or department’s Technology Node to determine if you have access to one.
Using the central streaming servers
1. Make sure you have a file that will stream successfully.
- Windows Media video files (.wmv/.wma) and Real Media files (.rm) are preferred. QuickTime files (.mov) can be used, but will require extra steps to work.
- Window sizes should be approximately 320x240 and 360x272 for widescreen video.
- Video files that are too large may not play over the internet.
2. Request disk space
- Fill out the streaming server web form
- Once you have been given space on the server, you will receive an email containing:
- The server host name (e.g., ubunix.buffalo.edu)
- A directory path (e.g., net/stream/data1/web/www/insecure/shared/ublearns/johndoe)
- The address or URL to use to access your video
Note: Save this message. You will need to use this information.
3. Upload your file to the streaming server
- Use SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) software to upload your file to the streaming server. Download SFTP software and documentation if you don’t already have it.
4. Create an External Link on UBlearns:
Once your file is located on a server, you can link to it from within your course.
Control Panel > select any content area > Add External Link
Enter your streaming file URL using the following information:
Real Media Files (.rm)
- rtsp://stream.buffalo.edu/shared/ublearns/yourFolder/yourFile.rm
- Replace yourFolder/yourFile with the names of your folder and file.
Note: Use the proper file extension (.rm)
Windows Media File (.wmv)
- mms://stream.buffalo.edu/shared/ublearns/yourFolder/yourFile.wmv
- Replace yourFolder/yourFile with the names of your folder and file.
Note: Use the proper file extension (.wmv)
If you have difficulty viewing the video, you may need to adjust the file permissions. For assistance, contact ublearns@buffalo.edu.
