| Utilities Management Utilities Management staff with assistance from Utility Operations maintains an extensive utility usage database for both campuses. This includes monthly consumption information for water, electricity, heating oil and natural gas. Historical information is analyzed to identify and verify energy conservation measures, prepare departmental invoices and to reconcile utility invoices from suppliers. The Utilities Manager with support from various University Facilities departments and the University Energy Officer coordinated a large scale energy conservation project at the South Campus. This comprehensive project was completed in spring of 2008. For details regarding the energy conservation project click here. The University is teaming up with New York Power Authority (NYPA) to implement an energy conservation project at UB North and South campuses and downtown facilities. The lead contractor supervising the project design, construction and commissioning will be Wendel Duchscherer, a local engineering firm. The project will cost $9.6M and shall include: extensive site lighting upgrades; security cameras and blue light safety phones at South; central chiller plant work at North; a heat recovery project at North; air conditioning upgrades at the Research Institue on Addictions located downtown; and hot water heater replacements at several locations. Project construction begins this summer and will take approximately 18 months to complete. The Utilities Manager,
John Russo jprusso@buffalo.edu,
is directly responsible for the procurement of utilities; implementing
hedging strategies to protect the University budget from sever utility
price increases; purchasing a portion of the energy supply from renewable
resources such as wind power, promoting energy conservation initiatives
and coordinating emergency demand reduction strategies to assist NY State
power grid operations.
