A Pesticide Free Campus
On May 1999, the University at Buffalo violated a 10 year
moratorium on pesticide use on its campuses. Since then, the Environmental
Network has worked alongside student movements (UB Go Green!) to resume the
moratorium. The Environmental Task Force's (E.T.F.) student representative
Stacey L. Vaeth drafted a
pesticide report offering feasible alternatives to pesticide use. The
E.T.F. is presently working to get this report made into a policy on campus.
Socially
Responsible Investing (SRI)
For centuries, institutions of higher learning
have acted as centers of ethical thought and behavior. In recent years, universities have
demonstrated this commitment with their fiscal policy. The students and faculty from around the
country who wrote The Proposal for Socially Responsible Investment by Colleges
and Universities believe that our schools can and will take further steps
through investment policy to support social and environmental justice. Further, the growing influence of
multinational corporations requires that colleges and universities be especially
vigilant in fulfilling their responsibilities as investors and
stakeholders. The Environmental Network is working towards making the
University at Buffalo a socially responsible investing school. For further
information you may contact the officers at ub-en@acsu.buffalo.edu.
Free Trade Coffee
A new wave of coffee is emerging to cater to our cravings for
justice as much as it does our cravings for caffeine. The Fair Trade
certification mark has been developed to assure consumers that the coffee we
drink was purchased under Fair Trade conditions. To become Fair Trade certified,
an importer must meet stringent international criteria; paying a minimum price
per pound of $1.26, providing much needed credit to farmers, and providing
technical assistance such as help transitioning to organic farming. Fair Trade
for coffee farmers means community development, health, education, and
environmental stewardship.
