3rd Dan
Senpai Peter Macaluso
graduated from UB in 1992 with a BS degree in Aerospace
Engineering and a MS degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Currently he is working as an Aeronautical Engineer in
local industry.
Following is a short
interview with him.
When
did you start studying Seido Karate?
1988
How
did it start?
I had always enjoyed the
martial arts and when I came to UB as a freshman I wanted to
continue my study of karate which I started in high school.
Unfortunately, my schedule didn’t allow it until my junior
year but I still remember walking into the Alumni Arena
Gymnastics Room as a white belt. What an intimidating time!
Why
are you still doing this?
-
Seido Karate is
different. The idea of “throwing away your ego” is constant
through all of our training. Seido is a traditional
Japanese style of karate which finds that balance between
physical toughness and mental toughness. We are not
concerned with who is better than whom because competition
tends to create an ego (there is always a “winner” and a
“loser”). We are not concerned with what shape your mind or
body is in.
What we are concerned
with is that when you come to class you give 100% effort and
that when you leave you are a little bit better than when you
came in.
-
Many students and
teachers have helped me train in karate over the years. I
cannot re-pay them for their time with me but I can honor
them by continuing to learn and teach just as they did.
